Itinerary

1
Day 1: Arrival in Guwahati – transfer to Shillong
Arrive in Guwahati, the gateway to North-East India and the capital city of one of the neighbouring states of Meghalaya, Assam. You would be greeted by your tour leader post, which we would be moving towards Shillong, the starting point of your cycling adventure.

En route, we would be stopping for lunch and visiting the first of many attractions you would witness throughout your cycling tour - the unmissable Umiam Lake. Take in the beautiful panoramic surroundings around one of the most popular attractions and one of the biggest artificial lakes of Meghalaya, after which we proceed to our hotel in Shillong. You will be introduced to the Bike Tribe team and your bikes in the evening.

Cycling distance: None.
Overnight stay and dinner at Shillong.
2
Day 2: Cycling in Shillong city
Gear up for your first cycling day of the trip as we depart early morning for a city tour of Shillong! The capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong, exemplifies why Meghalaya is known as the abode of clouds. As you would witness while riding through the alpine terrain of this beautiful city, wispy cold fluff of moving grey clouds would come to greet you. We would be riding for approx. 30km on slightly uphill plain roads in and around the city, passing by cathedrals and cottages and experiencing the busy part of the city through the thriving markets of Shillong, namely Bada Bazaar and Police Bazaar. After lunch, we would unwind with a peaceful trail ride by cycle, including off-roading through a hidden gem called Malki Forest. There is also an option of a short 2 hours hike through Malki Forest.
Reach the hotel by evening.

Cycling distance: 30 km
Overnight stay and dinner at Shillong.
3
Day 3: Shillong to Sohra via Sacred Forest
Today we will depart early morning from Shillong towards a relatively/ an even more untouched oasis, a town called Sohra (Cherapunji). The two wettest places on Earth are in Meghalaya, and Sohra is one of them! Get ready to explore this slice of heaven that is full to the brim with lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, mysterious caves, unspoiled views, endless hiking trails with no path, making it ideal for an adrenaline junkie and nature lover. En route, around 2 hours into the drive, we would reach Mawphlang Sacred Forest, home to the most celebrated of all the ancient sacred groves of Meghalaya. Discover the pride of the Khasi people, get up close with the Khasi customs and traditions that have been woven into the forest, and get transported to a primeval age on a guided walk. Find yourself amidst an impenetrable mass of greens with a dark canopy above, without a trace of the outside world, walking on numerous trails, especially the David Scott Trail, that will lead to the most panoramic view of the verdant forest and clear streams. We would have worked up an appetite by this time and stopped at Mylliem Village for a delectable local lunch. We would then proceed to Mawkdok Village, the starting point of today’s ride! Enjoy a 30 km long fun cycling adventure on undulating, winding, smooth, and primarily straight tarmac roads leading back to Sohra. Reach the hotel by evening.

Cycling distance: 30 km
Overnight stay and dinner at Sohra.

Day 4: Exploring Sohra (Cherapunji)
Rise early, get on your bikes and make way for a full day of cycling in and around Sohra! We have an adrenaline-pumping day ahead of us, starting from chasing innumerable waterfalls, exploring a lesser-known thrilling activity called caving, and witnessing the ancient civilization of Sohra. We would be visiting the eye-catching Mawsawa, Dainthlen, Wei Sawdong waterfalls and burrowing through Arwah Cave known for its ‘limestone masterpieces’ formed along its walls and ceilings. We will also go back in time to a little-known village rich in Khasi history, called Rangjyrteh, known for its mastery of iron smelting in ancient times, but now it is left abandoned in ruins only referred to in old Khasi folklore.
After an exciting day, unwind and rest at the hotel.

Cycling distance: 40 km
Overnight stay and dinner at Sohra.
5
Day 5: Cycle and Hike to Nongriat
Today we escape Sohra momentarily for an overnight stay in a local village and 1.5 days of hike and bike lying ahead of us. So, leave your luggage, carry a light day pack, and get going! We will start our day with a pleasant 16 km ride mostly downhill on undulating terrains to Tyrna Village, the starting point of our mildly arduous but refreshingly green trek that involves a descent through a leafy forest on well-constructed concrete steps to the most famous of the natural wonder which is unique to the state of Meghalaya: Umshiang Double Decker Living Roots Bridge. A specimen of the bioengineering and architectural skills of the indigenous people of the region, living root bridges have been handcrafted and grown by many generations of the Khasi tribes using the powerful roots of rubber trees to provide a permanent solution to temporary bridges that have to be built using bamboo or wood. With so many streams, rivers, and lakes to cross, they have simply been growing these bridges that can survive up to 500 years since the era of their forefathers instead of building them.

Unwind with a relaxing overnight stay and dinner at a local village called Nongriat, the home of the Umshiang Bridge (Double Decker root bridge).
Cycling distance: 16 km (downhill)
Overnight stay at Nongriat.
6
Day 6: Exploring Nongriat and back to Sohra
Reach the hotel by evening. After dinner, enjoy a deep sleep out of happy exhaustion! Rise and shine for the next part of our adventure! Today we would take a challenging half-day trek from Nongriat to Rainbow Falls. The hike begins with a series of ascents and descents on raw and earthy stairs followed by a hilly trail with sounds of the falls secluded deep within the forest to accompany you. Following the mighty roaring of the waterfall, you will finally see a hint of turquoise blue through the thick green foliage and the hills. Welcome to the powerful and breathtakingly beautiful- Rainbow Falls! Treat yourself to a much-needed dip in the chilled, deep blue and transparent waters, and reach out to the colours of the rainbow that are reflected on both sides of the gigantic rock under the waterfall. After a rejuvenating swim session, we will head towards the endpoint of our trek and come out through the tallest plunge waterfall in India called Nohkalikai.
We would then move back to Sohra. On the drive back, we will rejoice in the memories of this beautiful getaway.

Cycling distance: None
Overnight stay in Sohra.

Day 7: Sohra to Dawki-Shnongpodeng
Post breakfast, we bid adieu to the wonderful Sohra and move towards Dawki-Shnongpodeng. After reaching Laitkynsew Village, we would climb on our bikes for a 35km ride to a small town situated on the India- Bangladesh border, which travellers so widely known as the place where the crystal clear Dawki river is present, the topmost priority in the to-do list when visiting Meghalaya for every traveller, that it is almost synonymous with the river. The terrain would be primarily undulating tarmac roads, and en route, we will be crossing the cleanest village in India called Mawlynnong. We would be halting here and witnessing panoramic vistas of Bangladesh plains and the whole of Mawlynnong from the Bamboo viewpoints. We would then continue our ride to one of the cleanest rivers in India. The first picture that pops up when one researches Meghalaya is the stunning Umngot River/ Dawki River. The water of Umngot is so clear that the boats floating on it seem to be suspended on a crystal glass surface, and you can also see a variety of gorgeous rocks, pebbles on the riverbed, and even spot fish in the emerald green waters.
We would be staying overnight at the Shnongpodeng campsite on the banks of the Umngot River to experience the sight and place one cannot get enough of, even more!
