After this, the river flows out as – Chandrabhaga or Chenab. The landscape turns arid, and we cycle on - rutty, dusty, and rocky roads. After a gradual climb across Zing Zing Bar, we begin our ascent towards Baralacha La Pass (4889 m). This is a long and strenuous climb but the view from the top is worth all the effort. The trails of Zanskar, Ladakh, Spiti, and Lahaul come together at Baralacha, which gives justice to its name (Baralacha), which means - “a pass with Crossroads”. This is the main crossing of the Himalayan Ranges and the views are to – die for. One gets a view of multiple snow-clad peaks including Barashigri, Chandrabhaga, and Mulkila. From the pass, our cycling becomes easier as we descend past Kiling Serai and on to Sarchu.

At the top of the loops, we would have climbed 500 mts and reached - Naki La Pass, which is at a height of 4950 m. What goes up, must come down. So now, we descend for about 4.4 km and stop to have lunch at a collection of tea tents. Post lunch, we climb to the top of the second pass of the day – Lachung la. The road winds up for 7.3 km all up to the pass, which is at 5100 m. After the pass, we cross the barren – Zanskar Range and ride through astonishing rock formations of the Trans Himalayas. This area is above 4500 m and is home to the tough Changpas - who are Tibetan nomads living in Yak hair tents and graze entire flocks of sheep and yaks.
Today is going to be hard on the legs, and we will be crossing the last pass before Leh. We will have a long climb that starts gradually and winds over higher and steeper to the top of Tanglang La Pass (5350 m). This would be the ‘top’ of the second-highest (civilian) motorable road in the World. The views and the ‘sense of accomplishment’ is rewarding when you reach the top and you also get a glimpse of the Karakoram Ranges. There shall be mostly climbs along the entire route and we shall be climbing over majestic Passes, taking periodic stops for Nutrition and Hydration.
The terrain varies from rolling to high hills. To get ready for this trip, we suggest biking regularly beforehand and hitting a few hills whenever you can. In case you do not have the luxury of living in the mountains, it is best to train on your bike with an extra load/ weight in the back. We recognize that not everyone lives in an area conducive to outdoor riding, but please keep in mind that while running, riding a stationary bike, spinning and other aerobic exercise will help improve your strength, endurance, and cardiovascular health, these activities will not help with balance.
